Go from an idea to customer validation + prototype + team + mentors in 54 hours
All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model:
- Everyone who has an idea is most welcome to pitch them on Friday evening.
- Teams are formed organically around the top ideas(determined by popular vote).
- Teams then go ahead and brainstorm, perform market validation, if applicable step out and do some customer interviews to know what they want, build surveys and float it around, create a business model based on customer/market feedback/requirements, design, code and build a prototype.
- As the teams work on the above activities, they also receive mentoring and feedback from experienced entrepreneurs
- These teams then demo the prototypes and pitch their ideas to a panel of entrepreneurs and angel investors on Sunday night.
- While 3 winning teams will walk away with some cool prizes, each and every participant will go back with a memorable learning experience and new friends.
Aligning Head, Heart and Hands
At Startup Weekend Mumbai, before offering a framework and support to convert an idea into a prototype and financial model (be it business or a non-profit initiative) it would encourage people to discover their core motivations and values, so that the alignment of head-heart-and-hands can lead to alignment of personal and professional values.
A traditional venture capitalist's lens demands thinking about “scale” and “exit” form a very early stage. But not every company needs to start with venture capital funding. At the event, we will also explore models of how startup ecosystem "Designed for Generosity"
can look like. And trust us, some amazing things happen When Generosity meets Venture Capital :-)
Most early stage ventures are like experiments that need support and nurturing to ensure that all effort must focus on offering a product or a service that people would really find useful and valuable. The model for financial sustainability, whether venture capital or other sources should emerge based on the results of the experiment and needs of the venture.
So, is this an event for social entrepreneurs?
We believe that all entrepreneurs create social impact in their own ways, and hence we are inclusive about the definition of “social entrepreneurship”. What we certainly want to encourage in SW Mumbai on Nov 15-17 event, is a focus on projects/ventures that start with a purpose of creating value, solving a problem, serving the real needs of a customer and making a positive difference to people’s lives. Startup Weekend events across the world attract people from all backgrounds ranging from technology and design to marketing and finance. We've seen people from all age groups and backgrounds - entrepreneurs, senior employees wanting to startup, social workers, young professionals hungry to learn and students who want to get started early. It's the diverse mix of audience that facilitates cross pollination of ideas and learning of new skills.
